1. What is Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG)?
Human Chorionic Gonadotrophin (HCG) is a hormone produced in the woman organism shortly after embryo attaches to the uterine lining. It occurs after the ovulation on the 7-10 days (on the 9-10 days according to statistics). HCG concentration increases in several thousands at 7-11 weeks, and then it gradually decreases. Pregnancy tests are based on the detection of HCG hormone in urine.
2. What does test sensitivity mean, and what types of test sensitivity are known?
Sensitivity of pregnancy tests is measured in mIU/ml (Milli-International Units per milliliter)and vary between 10 mIU/ml and 40 mIU/ml. The lower the level of sensitivity the more sensitive the test is, and the earlier the pregnancy can be detected accordingly.
Most of tests have standard sensitivity of 20-25 mIU/ml that allows detecting pregnancy after the 7th day of delay of menstrual cycle. Tests with sensitivity of 10 mIU/ml can detect even small concentration of HCG hormone in urine. These tests are effective on the 7th day after conception, i.e 1-2 days before expected menstrual cycle.
3. What do the manufacturers take as a basis producing pregnancy tests?
Producing pregnancy tests manufacturers take as a basis the suggestion that the standard menstrual cycle lasts 28 days, as well as ovulation and conception occur approximately on 14th day of woman’s menstrual cycle. It means that theoretically the average woman can get the accurate test result in two days before expected menstrual cycle. However some women have longer or shorter menstrual cycle, so ovulation and conception can occur earlier or later in compare with the standard scheme data. In this case it is preferable to perform pregnancy tests after a few days of delay of menstrual cycle.
4. When should the ovulation test be performed?
As a rule the accurate result can be received on the 7th day after ovulation. Embryo implantation lasts 6-12 days, and often it occurs on the 10th day. In 90% of all cases by this time embryo has attached to the uterine lining, and HCG hormone has being produced. But in 10% of all cases embryo implantation occurs later. On the 7th day of delayed menstrual cycle embryo implantation is registered in 97% of cases. Taking into account these facts all the gynecologists recommend their patients to perform pregnancy test only after delay of menstrual cycle!
5. Why test result can be false?
If HCG hormone concentration is not enough, test result can be false. It can happen if the conception has occurred just before the beginning of menstrual cycle, so HCG hormone has not been increased to the minimum level to be detected.
It is almost impossible to detect the exact moment of ovulation, it is even more difficult to detect the moment of conception and embryo implantation. In accordance with the latest researches, in 10% cases embryo implantation occurs later, only after the first day of delayed menstrual cycle. It can cause the false results of pregnancy tests at the early stages.
6. How does the level of HCG hormone increase in the organism of pregnant woman?
Consider the example:
We know the HCG level increases gradually, rising daily to 2 times. Let’s suggest that the fertilized egg attached to the uterine lining on the 7th day after ovulation. HCG level rose to 2 mIU/ml on the 7th day, to 4 mIU/ml on the 8th day, to 8 mIU/ml on the 9th day, and to 16 mIU/ml on the 10th day. Taking into account this data pregnancy tests with sensitivity of 10 mIU/ml can detect HCG hormone on the 10th day after conception, under condition that pregnancy is normal.
Now let’s consider the case if the implantation occurred on the 10th day. HCG level rose to 2 mIU/ml on the 10th day, to 4 mIU/ml on the 11th day, to 8 mIU/ml on the 12th day, and to 16 mIU/ml on the 13th day. So under condition that implantation occurred on the 10th day after conception, pregnancy tests with sensitivity of 10 mIU/ml can detect HCG hormone on the 13th day of pregnancy, i.e on the first day of delayed menstrual cycle.
Organism of each woman is unique. In 1% of all cases embryo implantation occurs on the 3rd day after conception, while in 3% of cases it can take place on the 12-13 days after conception. So gynecologists recommend performing pregnancy tests in a few days after delay of menstrual cycle to avoid false test results.
